Solidarity Is the Political Version of Love: Lessons from Jewish Anti-Zionist Organizing

Tuesday January 21, 2025 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema, 149 W Hastings Street, Vancouver

Join Independent Jewish Voices-Vancouver for a powerful evening of conversation and reflection with Rabbi Alissa Wise and Rebecca Vilkomerson, co-authors of the groundbreaking book Solidarity Is the Political Version of Love: Lessons From Jewish Anti-Zionist Organizing. Organizers Wise and Vilkomerson, formerly with Jewish Voice for Peace, will discuss the challenges of building a mass Jewish organization committed to the liberation of Palestine and offer strategies for building solidarity.

The event will also feature a land acknowledgement and opening remarks from special guest Chief Rueben George of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and a dynamic discussion with local activists Jeeda Musleh, lead organizer with Free Palestine Tri-Cities and Apartheid-Free Communities; Beth Carlson-Malena, pastor and organizer with Christians for a Free Palestine; and Stephen Aberle, leading activist with Independent Jewish Voices.

The evening’s discussion will be moderated by Canadian filmmaker, educator and journalist Avi Lewis and conclude with an interactive Q&A session exploring the intersections of justice, activism, and solidarity in the fight for Palestinian liberation.

As Rabbi Alissa and Rebecca write: “We know that the lesson of the Holocaust and all other genocides is that all human life is sacred and that we must struggle against any systems of power that say otherwise. For all of us who understand that ‘never again’ must mean for anyone, there has been no question about what is demanded of us in this time: unrelenting action, mobilization, and disruption. Everything we can do to stop this … Not in spite of our Jewishness, but because of it.”
