Independent Jewish Voices Victoria and Vancouver express their support for the growing initiative to Ban Israeli Wines in British Columbia.
For decades, but with new intensity since 2023, Israel has run rampant over both international law and morality. Canada has stood by, refusing to act on its obligations to prevent genocide. If international law and the protection of human rights for all peoples are able to be violated over and over again by Israel without consequence or our country taking action, they lose all meaning.
The Government of B.C. has a duty to act to comply with international law, which includes the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. B.C. has demonstrated that it will take action on international issues, specifically with its 2022 ban on sales of Russian alcohol and its 2025 ban on sales of U.S. alcohol.
Banning wine labelled as a product of Israel would not prevent consumers from purchasing kosher wine. Kosher wines and spirits from Italy, Nicaragua and Chile are available in BC liquor stores.
